How do legitimate modeling agencies work?Reputable modeling agencies make money by getting models paid work, not by charging fees upfront. They typically earn a percentage (usually 10-20%) of what you make from modeling gigs.
-
Do I have to pay for a portfolio or modeling classes?Be cautious! While legitimate agencies might recommend you build a portfolio, they won’t force you to buy it through them or pay for classes. Professional models often invest in quality headshots, but these should be on your terms with trusted photographers.
-
What are red flags of a scam modeling agency or school?High upfront fees: If they demand payment for representation or "guaranteed work," it's likely a scam. Pressure to pay for classes: No legitimate agency will require you to take expensive classes. No verifiable clients: If they can't name models they've represented or brands they’ve worked with with proof, that’s a warning sign. Guaranteed success: The modeling world is competitive, and no agency can guarantee you’ll become a star.
-
What’s the difference between a modeling school and an agency?Modeling schools focus on teaching runway walking, posing, and other skills. While they can be helpful for beginners, they are not a requirement to get signed by an agency. Be wary of schools that claim their programs guarantee agency representation while asking for fees.
-
How can I safely pursue a modeling career?Research agencies thoroughly. Look for reviews, Better Business Bureau ratings, and professional websites. Attend open calls or submit online applications to established agencies. Connect with industry professionals at legitimate events like Boise Fashion Week. Avoid signing contracts or paying fees without careful review.
-
How can I ensure a modeling agency or school is legitimate?A professional website is a good starting point, but there are several steps you should take to verify legitimacy: Check for a professional website: Ensure the agency or school has a well-designed, up-to-date website that includes clear information about their services, models, and recent work. Verify contact information: Look for a physical address and a local phone number. Be cautious of agencies that only provide a P.O. box or generic email. Assess their online presence: Check their social media profiles for activity, professionalism, and posts featuring models or clients they work with. Look for references: Reputable agencies list models they represent and brands they’ve worked with. Reach out to these individuals for insights. Check for licensing: Some states require modeling agencies to be licensed or bonded. Verify this with your state’s consumer protection agency or attorney general.
